Chris Evans and James Fraser discovered a “treasure” while metal detecting and digging on a field in Anglesey, Wales. The duo uncovered about 400 medieval coins.
“The sound from the metal detector was so loud. The beeping nearly gave me a headache! It was such an amazing experience,” Chris Evans shared.
Chris requested that the location remain secret. He revealed that the medieval coin hoard dates back to the reign of King Edward I, who ruled England from 1272 to 1307.
Upon discovery, they followed legal protocols and reported the find to the authorities. The entire collection of coins was taken to the National Museum Wales in Cardiff for analysis by experts.
“The coins were minted on both sides. The front features the king’s crown, and the back shows a cross. As a responsible metal detectorist, I am not allowed to clean these coins. I filled in the hole and reported it to the National Museum Wales. I hope they can be displayed at Oriel Mon,” Chris said.
Alan Tamblyn, Secretary of the National Council for Metal Detecting, praised Chris and James for their responsible actions.
He shared, “I’ve been metal detecting for 25 years and have never found a treasure like that. Honestly, I feel quite envious, but I am extremely happy for them.”
This is not the first time Chris has found valuable items. Previously, he discovered a 3,000-year-old axe head, an ancient brooch, and several other gold rings.
