Hairstyles in the ’60s Were Oh So Dramatic

Each era has its own feel and look. In the 1930s women’s hair was short and the dresses were long. In the 1940s voluminous padded jackets matched with voluminous victory roll hairstyles. In the 1960s, however, the game was turned completely on end as fashion evolved to cater to a more modern sensibility.
Starting in the mid-1960s hemlines rose and hairstyles became more and more varied. Many different types of teased bouffant and beehive hairdos were en vogue, as was the mighty flip hairstyle and the ever-popular bangs. But, if a woman had a lot of time and money, she could let a hairstylist truly run free with the hairstyle- employing setting, teasing, cutting, faux flowers, and even the use of wiglets, which are half wigs (for anyone not in the know).

The trendiest looks of the era were quite big and the rise of both hairspray and hair gel made a huge difference to how women were able to do their hair and set it. Plus, with the mod fashions that were in style, hairdos that were sleeker, yet more complicated, were done for special occasions and nights on the town.

Have a look at the 1964 film reel clip below in which actress, Joanne Dainton, gets an absolutely fabulous 1960s hairdo unlike any other.
