Dolly Parton was raised in poverty and struggle. She was born in Tennessee on January 19, 1946, as the fourth of twelve children, and grew up in a one-room cabin on the Little Pigeon River with her parents and siblings.

Her father was a sharecropper with no schooling, while her mother was of Welsh heritage. “We were dirt poor but wonderfully joyful,” Parton later said about her family. Despite the lack of worldly possessions, they were delighted and full of love.

Dolly Parton remarked on her humble upbringing in a low-income family.

Although meals were limited and they usually slept three to a bed, her parents were able to provide a home over their heads, food in their stomachs, and clothes on their backs for their children.

Despite their little financial resources, they were surrounded by people who had endured considerably more than they did.

The family’s tiny cabin was barely large enough for them, so they spent the majority of their time outside. Dolly first saw a toilet when she was eight years old, when visiting her aunt’s house. She was initially afraid to use it since she assumed it would suck her down!

During the winter, the family prepared soap and washed once a week, and in high school, she had to wash her bed every day because her brothers left it filthy at night.

Dolly Parton, who grew up in poverty and had a difficult childhood, has never forgotten the lessons she learnt from her family.

She brings up these memories when talking about her music and other aspects of her life. “My love for my family will never end,” she continues, adding that it “is always there and directs me in whatever I do.”
