Britney Spears turned 43 on Dec. 2, but that wasn’t the only milestone she marked on her special day. In fact, it is also the day she became a legally single woman following her split from ex-husband Sam Asghari last year.
According to legal documents obtained by E! News, though Sam and Britney’s divorce was settled back in May, the date upon which their marital status officially ended was Dec. 2, 2024.
The former couple’s divorce documents marked the split as uncontested, meaning both Britney and Sam (born Hesam Asghari) appeared in the case and “entered into a written agreement regarding their property and their marriage or domestic partnership rights, including support, the original of which is being or has been submitted to the court.”
Sam, 30, filed for divorce from the “Gimme More” singer in Aug. 2023, just over a year after his and Britney’s June 2022 nuptials.
At the time of his filing, in addition to asking the media and the public to proceed kindly, he said of his time with Britney, “We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always.”
For her part, Britney—who shares sons Sean, 19, and Jayden, 18, with ex-husband Kevin Federline—shared insight into her split the next day.
“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together,” she wrote on Instagram. “6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but … I’m not here to explain why because its honestly nobody’s business !!! But, I couldn’t take the pain anymore honestly !!!”
“I would love to show my emotions and tears on how I really feel but some reason I’ve always had to hide my weaknesses !!!” Britney—who was also previously married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours—continued. “You’re supposed to be loved unconditionally … not under conditions !!!! So I will be as strong as I can and do my best !!! And I’m actually doing pretty damn good !!! Anyways have a good day and don’t forget to smile !!!”
In the time since, the former couple, who first started dating in 2016, have proved there are no toxic vibes lingering between them. And in fact, when Britney referred to Sam as a “gift from God” in her Oct. 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Sam told TMZ, “That part made me smile.”
More recently, Sam—who began his career as a professional fitness trainer and has since pivoted to focus more on acting—shared an update on his new chapter following his divorce.
“It’s the bed that you make yourself, and you got to learn how to lay in it,” he told People at the inaugural amfAR Las Vegas benefit event for AIDS research at Wynn Las Vegas, “so it’s part of the lifestyle.”
The Traitors season three competitor said, “You just got to keep it positive,” adding, “You got to stay grounded and understand what the truth is and really just live with that rather than other people’s opinions or anything like that.”
